Gala Theatre Follows Up Last Year’s ‘Elf’s Christmas Adventure’

Families are invited to enjoy a magical Christmas story at Gala Theatre this festive season…

Elf’s Christmas Toys, at the Durham City venue during December, is the follow-up to last year’s extremely successful production of Elf’s Christmas Adventure.

When the North Pole’s toy machine gets in a muddle, it’s up to the audience to help Elf and his friends fix the machine in time to make all the presents for Christmas.

Aimed at families with children under the age of five, Elf’s Christmas Toys is an original story that offers children an introduction to theatre.

A co-production between Gala and Durham Scenic Workshops, who were also responsible for Elf’s Christmas Adventure, it is part of a busy festive period at the theatre.

Running alongside the production will be Gala’s fun-filled family panto, which this year sees regulars Neil Armstrong and Paul Hartley directing and starring in the rags-to-riches story of Cinderella.

Robin Byers, Durham County Council’s service manager for place and experience, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming Durham Scenic Workshops back to Gala and working with them to produce Elf’s Christmas Toys.

“Last year’s show was incredibly popular with families and we’re already seeing a huge demand for tickets this year with some shows already selling out.

“We can’t wait to see what mischief Elf gets into this year.”

Elf’s Christmas Toys runs from Friday 4th December to Thursday 24th December, with performances at 10.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm.

Tickets are priced from £6. To book, visit Gala box office, call 03000 266 600, or go online at www.galadurham.co.uk.

Razzamataz Rehearsals In Full Festive Swing

Rehearsals are in full swing as Razzamataz prepare for their biggest public performance to date…

On Saturday 19th December, students from Razzamataz Durham Theatre School will be performing a selection of favourite Christmas songs to entertain shoppers in Durham City Centre. Alison Beveridge, Principal of the school, says: “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to bring some magic to the city and get involved with our local community this Christmas.”

“Our students just love performing, and the chance to showcase their talents and hard work in a public setting is really exciting.”

At Razzamataz Durham Theatre School, we offer dance, drama and singing classes for children aged 2-18 years (and much, much more). We like to go the extra mile and give our students amazing customer service, and an amazing experience.

This year sees the return of our popular Christmas Card Competition. The school are running a competition for students to create their own Razzamataz greetings card. The winning design will be professionally printed and sent to the theatre school’s friends, partner businesses, and those who have worked with them over the past year. Last year’s winner, Molly says, “It was great to get involved and so cool to see my design come to life.”

Parents are carers are also catered for. Last month, the school hosted a Phoenix Cards Coffee Morning and raised £99.22 for The Rainbow Trust Charity. Families and friends were invited to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee and a slice of homemade cake while they browsed the catalogues of exclusive cards and stationery whilst their children were in class.

Suzy Blooms, a Razzamataz parent and professional florist, is hosting a Christmas Basket Arrangement Workshop for parents and carers to take part in. She says: “I think it’s wonderful that Razzamataz Durham cares for the whole family. It’s a great community to belong to as the team really have their students and parents’ best interests at heart. Since joining, my son has grown in confidence, developed new skills, and widened his friendship group.”

If you would like to be a part of all that’s going on at Razzamataz, or would like to request more information, contact Alison on 07599 283931, or email durham@razzamataz.co.uk.

The school welcomes new students, and is taking bookings for complimentary taster sessions for their first day of term on Saturday 9th January. Places are limited and operate on a first come, first served basis.

Christmas Comes Early To The Bridges, Sunderland

Sunderland’s the Bridges shopping centre is helping take the stress out of this Christmas with a whole host of incentives…

They’ll be playing Santa themselves, with a giveaway gift card scheme for anyone spending more than £100.

The shopping centre, which currently runs late night shopping on Thursdays, will be open until 8pm throughout the week from December 7th up until December 23rd.

During this time shoppers will be able to park for free in the Bridges’ car parks from 5.30pm until 9pm, as an added incentive to come into the city centre.

The Bridges is also reintroducing its successful gift card scheme, with anyone who spends more than £100 during any late night shop receiving a free £10 voucher.

“Christmas can be a stressful time when it comes to all the gifts that need to be bought, which is why we’ve gone all out to make sure it’s more of a pleasure than a chore for our customers,” said Andy Bradley, Centre Director at the Bridges.

“Later trading hours will make it much easier for our customers to get here after work or just shop in a more leisurely fashion.”

Santa’s grotto, at Central Square in the Bridges, will also be open from November 12th to give children the chance to meet Santa.

Entry into Santa’s grotto is £1.50, with 50p from every entry fee going to Rotary SR1, a group which works together on projects to make a difference and give back to the local community.

Along with the extended opening hours, the Bridges will be open even later on Black Friday, which falls on November 27th this year, with some stores staying open as late as 10pm.

Atlantean: It’s All Downhill Until Christmas

Long time In & Around contributor Atlantean takes a moment to reflect on the run-up to Christmas, and how the North East will be spending the next few months…

Well, Hallowe’en has past and we’re on our way to Christmas!

Advent calendars and Christmas cards are in the shops – the charity shops seem to lead the way with cards on sale from September. It’s that gradual move into winter where we lose three minutes off the end of every day, and – if you’re up – three minutes from the front too. That’s six minutes of daylight every day.

By the time we get to December 21st, it’s dark by 4.15pm, and I never cease to be amazed how wide the range is from shortest to longest day, when on June 21st it isn’t dark in the North East even at 10.45pm.

We observe the Armistice on November 11th and/or on the Remembrance Sunday which is nearest to it. All the more poignant in these current years, which are 100 years on from the horrors of the First World War (1914-18). At the time, it was known as the Great War, until the Second World War (1939-45) gave it a new label.

Sometimes the Lord Mayor’s Show in London falls on the same weekend, but this year the parade is on the 14th November. In Durham, we can look forward to the Lumiere produced by Artichoke, which takes place between Thursday 12th and Sunday 15th November. This has been a phenomenal success in recent years, and needs careful crowd direction and control to avoid a tragedy, especially around the river banks.

As it gets colder and darker, intrepid souls raise awareness of our homelessness situation, and the Bishop of Jarrow is promoting an event at Sunderland Minster on 4th December. It’s a sleep-out, and I note the charity Changing Lives, which used to be known as the Cyrenians, is also having a sleep-out for senior executives on 3rd March.

But for most of us, it’s a time for parties and a time of good will to all men (and women).

I used to have a toy racing circuit in which a car would race around a track, and pass on each circuit through a black tunnel where a mechanism would spring the car into increased speed. That’s the way I often feel about the year as a whole: it races by and we barely have time to draw breath before it’s downhill to Christmas. We enter the tunnel and we’re catapulted out the other side to continue the journey at an even faster pace.

Sometimes, I prefer to slow down, have a think, and consider those people who aren’t as fortunate as us. I’m concerned to learn that there are so many older people living on their own. Whereas I know I have about ten emails to send out on a Sunday, supposedly a day of rest, there are others of who don’t know how to send one and have no contacts to do so.

Don’t get carried away with your shopping this Christmas, and keep an eye on the prices. When I was in Scotland over the summer, I came across Irn Bru in a restaurant and asked whether there was such a thing as Diet Irn Bru. There is! And very tasty it is too. Our local small general store sells large bottles of sugar free Irn Bru for only 99p. On a visit to Tesco I noticed that their Brand Guarantee price applies to the same product – which they sell at £1.70. They compare prices with Asda, Morrisons and Sainsburys, but not with my little shop over the road.

My wife noticed something similar with large packs of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk chocolate, which were £3.50 in Tesco with the Brand Guarantee, but that she bought for £2.50 from our local Post Office and minimart when making some cakes, all of which makes me highly suspicious about supermarket pricing in this supposed season of goodwill.

Jak Inc: Raising Money For Charity With Letters From Santa

Marketing, print and design agency Jak Inc are spreading a little Christmas cheer again. Here’s their latest charity campaign, in their own words…

Looking for a way to make this Christmas extra special for the little ones?

A few years ago, we set up www.myletterfromsanta.co.uk. As Christmas came around, we wanted to do our bit for charity, so we used our experience as a print retailer to devise the best-looking, most magical Santa Claus letters we could.

Each year, we send out hundreds of letters (from Santa) to kids across the North East, and the proceeds of every letter goes to charity. This year, we’ve picked Children In Need.

Jak Inc MD Andy Knowles says, “Handing over the big cheque to St Cuthbert’s Hospice last year was a very proud moment. Giving back to our community is part of the Jak Inc DNA, and we hope this year can be another successful campaign.”

Letters are just £4.99, 100% of which goes to Children In Need. Click here to get yours!

Santa To Visit Autistic Children At St. James’ Park

A North East mum, worried her autistic son was missing out on the fun of Christmas, has come to the rescue – by arranging a festive lunch with Santa…

Not only will it be held at one of the sporting world’s most well-known venues, but all families living with autism are welcome, and Santa Claus himself will be making a special visit to meet them.

Samantha Doyle, from Chester-le-Street, set about planning the event (to be held on Monday 21st December at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park stadium) after realising six-year-old Freddie was missing out on a lot of the events and activities other children take for granted.

“Due to Freddie’s autism, his reactions to things can be extreme and unpredictable and, over the years, I’d gradually stopped taking him to the sort of events most children go to,” said Samantha.

“He couldn’t stand in a queue in a department store to meet Santa Claus, for example, and even going out to a restaurant for lunch can be difficult,” she added.

“And, because you can’t see autism, people don’t realise he has the condition. They just think he’s being naughty and badly behaved.

“Then I realised that my concerns about what other people might think were stopping Freddie having the sort of fun all children should have, especially at Christmas, and so I decided to organise this special event.”

And when it came to choosing a venue, Samantha, area sales manager for leading UK catering company, Sodexo Prestige Venues & Events, at St James’ Park, had a head start.

“The stadium’s the perfect venue,” she said. “Not only has it got the space and the catering facilities, but it’s a venue that attracts kids and families.”

On the day, the children will not only meet Santa Claus but also enjoy a festive three course lunch with their families and a special mini tour of the stadium.

Samantha’s idea has not only received the backing of the North East Autism Society but staff have also agreed to assist with the planning and will be there on the day.

The society’s family development manager Kerrie Highcock said, “I think it’s a great idea. A lot of families can feel socially isolated and the children do miss out on a lot so I think this is amazing – it’s going to be fantastic.”

Tickets cost £18.95 for a three course meal for adults and £10.95 for those aged 12 and under, with two course options also available. Bookings are now being taken and tables can be reserved by calling 0191 201 8525 or e-mailing candb@nufc.co.uk.

Win! Tickets To See Royal Opera House: The Nutcracker

In Peter Wright’s classic production, the stage sparkles with theatrical magic – a Christmas tree grows before our eyes, toy soldiers come to life to fight the villainous Mouse King and Clara is taken to the Kingdom of Sweets on a golden sleigh. Tchaikovsky’s score contains some of the best-known melodies in ballet, from the flurrying sounds of the Waltz of the Snowflakes to the dream-like Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs draw upon 19th-century images of Christmas, making this a magical production for the festive season.

We’re offering two VIP tickets to see Royal Opera House: The Nutcracker at Vue Gateshead on 16th December. To win, all you have to do is answer the following question…

This competition is now closed. Congratulations to Penny from Stanley!
