Rent A Cop Episode Four: Francis Confirms Feelings Towards Broccoli

Episode four of ‘Rent A Cop’ just aired. What do we think?

We were hoping that this week’s Rent A Cop headline might have been ‘Francis Makes Spectacular Arrest’, but sadly ’twas not to be.

A criminal was – sort of – caught, in the form of a rogue lock gluer, but Francis wasn’t really there, so…

Perhaps the most notable thing to come out of this week’s episode is the importance of broccoli in a healthy, balanced diet. According to Francis, “That’s the key. Broccoli. It’s awesome.”

For further information on broccoli, click here.

Perhaps the star of the show was Dave Ovens. Granted, his walkie-talkie competency leaves much to be desired, but the way he stared down the lock culprit as he walked away was like the physical embodiment of justice itself.

Twitter has once again had much to say, though not all of it positive.

Harsh.

If you missed the fourth episode, it’s now available on BBC iPlayer.

Check out our thoughts on episode onetwo and three.

In other news, please be aware of the unidentified man currently on the loose in Darlington. If your locks have been recklessly glued, you can call Sparta Security on 0800 0234480.

Luxury Ramside Spa Awarded Five Bubble Rating

A luxury North East spa is raising a glass in celebration, having been given a five bubble rating, despite only being open for a few months…

The multi-million pound Spa at Ramside Hall Hotel near Durham opened in August, with its facilities just receiving a massive thumbs up from The Good Spa Guide.

The Guide is regarded as the leading authority in the UK and only recognises and rewards spas which meet its strict criteria.

Following a recent inspection visit, the spa was told the good news – that it has achieved the highest possible rating.

“We’re delighted to have been told by the Good Spa Guide that we’ve achieved five bubbles,” said Jill Russell, Spa Director.

“It’s very unusual for a spa which has just opened to have achieved this so soon, so it’s a great endorsement for the fantastic facilities we have here.”

The Good Spa Guide said that it loved “the sense of peace and relaxation that pervades The Spa at Ramside, and the amount of natural light that spills into the space.”

The report also praises “the huge spa with plenty of loungers. We also liked the idea of having one area for spa guests only; health club members tend to be in a hurry, while spa-goers need to slow down and chill out.

“The upstairs treatment area is very quiet and restful, and the sleep sanctuary is perfect for chilling out post-treatment.”

Awarding the Spa at Ramside a five bubble rating, the Guide praises it for “its light and airy design, extra-large main pool and hydrotherapy pool, excellent spa restaurant, carefully designed treatment rooms and restful sleep sanctuary.”

It also praised the spa for its “good treatments and good value spa days and packages.”

The £8m Spa at Ramside opened in August and offers five pools, including one of the UK’s biggest hydrotherapy pools, fourteen treatment rooms, a thermal suite, a Sleep Sanctuary and a Rasul mud chamber.

It also offers a wide range of spa experiences which can be totally personalised to each individual.

For more information, or to book the Spa at Ramside, call 0191 375 3088, email enquiries@ramsidespa.co.uk, or visit the website at www.ramsidespa.co.uk.

Win! Tickets To See NT Live: Les Liaisons Dangereuses

Following the hugely successful broadcasts of Coriolanus and King Lear, National Theatre Live brings the Donmar Warehouse’s highly anticipated new production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses to cinemas – broadcast live from the Donmar’s London home.

Directed by Josie Rourke (Coriolanus), the cast includes Elaine Cassidy (The Paradise), Janet McTeer (The White Queen) and Dominic West (The Wire). In 1782, Choderlos de Laclos’ novel of sex, intrigue and betrayal in pre-revolutionary France scandalised the world. Two hundred years later, Christopher Hampton’s irresistible adaptation swept the board, winning the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play. Josie Rourke’s revival now marks the play’s thirty year anniversary.

Former lovers, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont now compete in games of seduction and revenge. Merteuil incites Valmont to corrupt the innocent Cecile de Volanges before her wedding night, but Valmont has targeted the peerlessly virtuous and beautiful Madame de Tourvel. While these merciless aristocrats toy with others’ hearts and reputations, their own may prove more fragile than they supposed.

We’re offering two tickets to see NT Live: Les Liaisons Dangereuses at Vue Gateshead on 28th January, 7pm. To win, all you have to do is answer the following question…

Sign Language Santa On His Way To Metrocentre

Intu Metrocentre is set to spread some festive cheer with a special event for hearing-impaired children…

As part of its Christmas festivities, intu Metrocentre, Gateshead, will be running two special sessions with Santa and Mrs Claus for children who communicate via sign language.

The sessions, which will run on Sunday November 22nd and Sunday November 29th from 10am – 11am, will give the children the chance to visit Santa’s grotto and tell him what they want for Christmas.

The idea for a signing Santa came after members of the intu Metrocentre Customer Services teams received sign language training.

“We wanted to make sure that everyone had the opportunity to enjoy our Christmas programme, and these sessions will mean that children with hearing problems will be able to join in the fun too,” said Helen Atkinson, marketing manager at intu Metrocentre.

“There’s so much going on in the centre throughout the festive season, including our seasonal pantomime, Santa’s grotto, our extended opening hours and raising funds for Text Santa. We’re really proud of this part of our Christmas programme.”

The sessions with Santa and Mrs Claus will take place between 10am and 11am. Members of the centre’s Customer Services team who have been trained to use sign language will also be on hand on the day.

North East Theatre Company To Debut Legally Blonde Musical

Newcastle will be turning blonde next week as a North East theatre company takes to the stage with their premiere of the smash-hit musical Legally Blonde…

West End Musical Theatre Company will be performing the musical based on the popular film, which tells the story of Elle Woods as she turns from sorority sister to legal high-flyer. Elle makes the move to Harvard Law School when she realises that her boyfriend is dumping her for someone more ‘serious’.

Elle, played by Cheryl Moody, even considers turning brunette!

The cast of North East performers will be entertaining audiences all week from 24th to 28th November at the Tyne Theatre, and the show even features two dogs – Chi-Chi the chihuahua, and Patsy the bulldog.

Despite having taken leading roles before, Cheryl say this is the most demanding part she’s ever had.

“I loved the movie as a child, and when I realised there was a musical version I couldn’t wait to audition for the role of Elle!”

Cheryl, who works as cabin crew for Thomas Cook airlines, already had the flowing blonde locks needed for the part, and the similarities don’t end there.

“I love playing Elle, and to be honest, I don’t find it too difficult. I am a very girly girl, I own a chihuahua, I love pink and I have been known to be a bit dizzy at times!”

As the lead role, Cheryl performs numbers such as Take It Like A Man, So Much Better and Legally Blonde.

Elle’s love interests are Warner, played by Kevin Rhodes, and Emmett, played by Alex Easten. Elle is advised to follow her heart when it comes to love in Paulette’s powerful, moving and funny song Ireland.

The Newcastle-based theatre group pulled off a remarkable coup when they gained the licence to perform the North East amateur premiere of the show. Ken Anderson, Managing Director of West End Musical Theatre Company says:

“We were delighted to obtain the exclusive amateur performance rights for the North East, prior to its general release in 2016. The show includes memorable music with great lyrics, lots of dancing and plenty of energy.”

Legally Blonde is on at the Tyne Theatre, Westgate Road, Newcastle. Performances are nightly at 7pm from Tuesday 24th until Saturday 28th November, as well as matinée performances at 2pm on the Thursday and Saturday.

Tickets can be booked online at www.tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk, by calling 0844 2491000 or in person at the Tyne Theatre box office.

North East Ice Skater Joins Dancing On Ice Star In Sunderland Frost Village

A rising North East skater will be getting the chance to showcase her skills alongside a Dancing on Ice star this Christmas…

As part of the activities taking place in Sunderland this festive season, aspiring ice skater Anna Waters will be performing with her coach Andrei Lipanov – one of the professional skaters from ITV’s Dancing on Ice – at the opening gala of the Sunderland Frost Village on November 26th.

An exciting programme has been put together by Sunderland’s Business Improvement District, which includes the creation of an ice rink at Keel Square, which will operate right up until Christmas Eve.

Andrei, who taught celebrities including Clare Buckfield, Heidi Range and Bonnie Langford for the TV show, currently coaches Anna, who is originally from Wallsend.

The pair specialise in Adagio pair skating, a highly skilled and acrobatic style of ice performing.

The skaters will launch the ice rink at a gala performance, alongside young ice skating duo, Josh and Ellie, from the hit CBBC documentary series Ice Stars.

Following the opening, the ice rink will run daily skating sessions and is available for private hire, along with a programme of activities including the chance to be coached by Andrei on various dates throughout the festive season.

“We’re so pleased to be able to give someone from the region the chance to perform with Andrei,” said Ken Dunbar, Chief Executive of Sunderland BID.

“It brings another dimension to our fabulous Frost Village and another reason for people to come and see what we have on offer in the run up to Christmas.”

Along with the open air ice rink, Sunderland Frost Village will offer a traditional Christmas market with more than 25 stalls selling food, drink, gifts and crafts and a traditional fun fair with a waltzer, ferris wheel and bumper cars on the former Vaux Brewery site.

Anna replaces Andrei’s regular skating partner, Susie Lipanova, who is unable to take part due to family commitments.

Sunderland’s Frost Village will be open daily between 10am and 10pm (8pm close Monday to Wednesday), and until 4pm on Christmas Eve – though skating on this day must be booked in advance.

Prices for skating starts from £6.50 per child and £7.50 per adult.

Full activity listings and opening times are available at www.sunderlandchristmas.co.uk.

Atlantean: Volkswagen’s Smoking Gun

Long time In & Around contributor Atlantean takes a moment to reflect on the Volkswagen scandal…

I own a Volkswagen Golf.

Not something I am particularly proud of at the moment, as a paid up supporter of Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, and a supporter of Oxfam and internet campaigning group Avaaz.

With the Paris Climate Change Summit coming up (30th November to 11th December) with the aim of trying to arrest global warming, many commentators are warning that we are at – or beyond – the tipping point when planet warming becomes irreversible.

I was surfing the Volkswagen GB website recently, finding nothing about the emissions scandal, when to my surprise I found the following message at the bottom of the page:

“Our CO2 and consumption values are provisional and are currently under review. Revised values will be published if necessary.”

But hang on… the scandal was not about CO2. It was about nitrous oxides from diesel engines. On top of 11 million vehicles worldwide (508,276 of them in the UK), we can now add a minimum of 800,000 petrol cars too.

I took my four month old Golf into my dealer, Pulman of Durham, and requested to hand the vehicle back in if it were affected by the scandal. Their immediate response was that I should contact their solicitors.

How’s that for customer service, before we even established if my car was affected?

I had said nothing about going to law. I was willing to hand back the car and cancel the finance agreement under the Sale of Goods Act. They checked, and yes, my diesel car was affected.

Five weeks later, having heard nothing, I phoned Pulman, whose receptionist had never heard of NOx emissions. Wonderful. I was told I could check on line, so I entered my car’s vehicle identification number, and was told that my car was NOT affected.

By now unsure, I was willing to hand back the keys and cancel the agreement even if the car was not affected by ‘dieselgate’. I wondered why my car wasn’t affected. Had VW had a change of heart and stopped fitting the defeat device? Why should they do that? Many people are signing up for a class action against Volkswagen being formulated by solicitors Slater and Gordon, and I think I will join them.

According to latest estimates, it looks like I may have to wait until well into next year to have my car fixed. But what will VW do? Will the fix affect performance of the engine and/or fuel consumption? Will there be any compensation, as there is in the United States?

If their car performs as well as before, and doesn’t use any more fuel, many people won’t be bothered so long as their car is fixed. However, I’m bothered about emissions, and chose a VW on the grounds of its better emissions performance. Even if my own car is unaffected – and I have had conflicting advice, remember– I do not wish to be associated with the brand.

They’ve finally got over the disgrace of building the People’s Car for Adolf Hitler, and now this!

Pulman of Durham, pay attention. You need to up your game with regard to customer service and make some communication with your customers, and if you do not have the answers from VW that you need, I suggest you find yourselves a different motor franchise or face the consequences within a year.

Have you been affected by this scandal? I’d like to know your thoughts. Write to atlantean247@yahoo.co.uk.

Rent A Cop Episode Three: Audience Question Show’s Authenticity

Episode three of ‘Rent A Cop’ just aired. What do we think?

Half 10 on a Thursday night is quickly becoming our favourite time of the week.

Episode three of Rent A Cop aired last night, and this week’s episode has seen Francis and the Sparta team reaching out to Darlington’s LGBT community. Political correctness is thrown swiftly out the window around three minutes in, when a gay couple – victims of a break-in – are jokingly asked “is this the first time your back door’s been knocked in?”

Francis goes on to battle with his instincts during a trip to Leeds, tasked with protecting a coach-load of drag queens on a night out. “I’ve got to keep telling myself, ‘it’s a man! It’s a man, Francis…”

We’re also shown another side to Sparta apprentice Pembow, who seems to be struggling with staying focused on the job at hand… and staying away from the booze. It’s admirable of Francis to give him the benefit of the doubt, but will Pembow’s employment survive until the end of the series?

Meanwhile, over on social media, audience reactions look as though they might be shifting away from being favourable. The burning question on everyone’s mind seems to be… is this for real!?

Apparently Francis’ exploits in this week’s episode have been enough to convince many people that Rent A Cop is all just one big joke. Personally, we’re with @leanneram88 on this one…

Yep, it’s real.

If you missed the third episode, it’s now available on BBC iPlayer.

Check out our thoughts on episode one and two.

What do you think? Is Sparta Security for real? Is it scripted? Is it a joke?
