Diamond Group tees off for charity

North East-based technology solutions provider, Diamond Group, used its recent corporate golf day to raise money for local charity and client, Age UK Northumberland.

Diamond Group, which announced a three-year partnership with the charity earlier this year that will save it around £90,000, recently welcomed the charity’s service users to its offices for a home-cooked lunch, bingo and entertainment, and wanted to raise money to support its work.

John Burns, managing director of Diamond Group, said: “It’s a charity doing fantastic work, something I really believe in. It feels natural for me and the Company to support Age UK Northumberland and I’m grateful so many people joined us for our golf day.

“I, and all the directors at Diamond would like to thank everyone who took part in the event for their generous support and donations, with a special thanks to Pam and Donna from Diamond and Rachel from Age UK Northumberland.  We look forward to seeing everyone at the event next year!”

The event was held at Wearside Golf Club and after networking and a bacon sandwich, golfers headed out to the course. The undeniable victors were the Henderson team; winning best team, with their player Rob Briggs scooping longest drive and best individual score. Nearest the pin was awarded to Graeme Haswell of the Bluebell Care team.

Following the game, players enjoyed a delicious two-course lunch in the club house, followed by a raffle. Prizes had been donated generously by local businesses and included a bottle of Moet & Chandon, beauty treatment vouchers and a meal for two at Aspers Casino.

Rachel Todd, head of income generation and marketing at Age UK Northumberland, said: “We’re a small independent charity and we need support like this to sustain our services; Diamond Group has made a real difference to our charity. The work that the Company has done to support us and the additional activities, welcoming our service users and raising money, is hugely appreciated.

“Loneliness in older people is a real issue in Northumberland and all of the services we provide work in some way to reduce social isolation and loneliness. The fundraising by Diamond Group will really help us to continue this work.”

The golf day raised £1200 in total which will be used to help older people across Northumberland. The Company is continuing its commitment by sponsoring a table at the Age UK Northumberland Annual Dinner, to be held in October.

Over £2m worth of European funding is now available for projects to strengthen the economy of rural areas across the North Pennine Dales…

 

The North Pennine Dales (NPD) LEADER programme is seeking applications for the grant to fund projects which increase farm and forestry production, boost rural tourism, or support small and micro businesses and farm diversification. Bids are also welcome for projects which provide cultural and heritage activities or offer rural services.

Running until 2020, Durham County Council acts as the accountable body for the NPD LEADER programme, which covers an extensive rural area across Gateshead, County Durham and south of Northumberland.

The aim of the €2.666m programme is to create jobs and support strong and sustainable economic growth, as well as helping to conserve the unique nature of the local landscapes. By funding projects put forward by people, groups and businesses in the area, it also hopes to target areas that the communities themselves see as a priority.

Cllr Eddie Tomlinson, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for rural issues, said: “The LEADER programme promises more jobs and stronger economies for rural areas across the region. By offering funding towards priorities that local communities themselves feel are important, these projects can make a real difference for generations to come, so we’d encourage everyone in the area to get in touch with ideas.”

Prestwick Care Unveils New Platinum Range Care Home

An award-winning North East care home provider has unveiled a state of the art facility overlooking Newcastle racecourse, following a £6.5m investment…

Melton House, Melton Park, Gosforth, is the latest addition to the portfolio of homes owned and operated by Prestwick Care, a division of the privately-owned, Newcastle-based Malhotra Group PLC.

Business leaders and health professionals were among those invited to watch group chairman Meenu Malhotra officially open Melton House, which is due to welcome its first residents within days.

They were then given a tour of the 67-bedroom home, which is aimed at those requiring residential care, as well as general and dementia nursing, and boasts a range of services and facilities, including in-house physiotherapy, a cinema, full laundry service and hairdressing salon.

Among the guests was Kingsley Smith OBE, chairman of Newcastle Hospital Foundation Trust, who said: “The facilities here are quite remarkable, and what is really impressive are the specialist services and nursing care for people with dementia.

“What we have here is a fantastic example of integrated care in the community, and I have been enormously impressed.”

More than 80 jobs have been created by the development of the purpose-built home, on the site of the former Northumberland Records Office.

Established in 1991, Prestwick Care provides a combination of nursing and residential care for elderly and vulnerable people in homes across the North East.

Prestwick Care’s director of care, Bunty Malhotra, said: “I am delighted to be able to introduce the eleventh home in the Prestwick family.

“It is the first in our new, Platinum range of homes and, in terms of care and quality of accommodation and facilities, I would like to think it is one of the best homes in the north of England.

“My joy has been doubled in that, by opening this facility, we are able to save 50 jobs being lost as a result of the imminent closure of a nearby care home.

“And, most importantly, we will be able to provide the continuity of care for that home’s elderly and vulnerable residents that is critical to their welfare.”

Building work is already underway to create the second home in Prestwick Care’s Platinum range; an 87-bedroom facility in the centre of Alnwick.

Work will also begin in the summer on a new care facility at Sunderland, with the company planning to open a further three new care facilities over the next three years.

The company is also involved in a range of other initiatives, working closely with Occupation Therapy students at Newcastle University and with Northumbria Health Care Trust on research around the therapeutic value of medication.
